🔧 Equipment & Skate Sharpening Tips

High-quality equipment keeps skaters safe, confident, and progressing.

Choosing Skates:

Skates should fit snugly and support the ankle.

Avoid plastic adjustable skates—they lack support.

Leather boots with a secure blade are preferred.

Toes should gently touch the end of the boot, not curl.

How to Tie Skates:

Snug at the toes

Very tight around the ankle area for support

Slightly looser at the top hooks to allow knee bend

Laces should never be wrapped around the ankle

Sharpening Schedule:

Sharpen skates every 20–30 hours of skating.

Harder ice or more advanced skills may require more frequent sharpening.

If a skater is slipping, struggling with edges, or losing control — they likely need a sharpen.

Blade Care:

Dry blades completely after each session.

Store using soft soakers only.

Use hard guards when walking anywhere off the ice.

Keep skates open to air out after each use.

Arena Rules & Safety

  • Helmets required for all CanSkate participants.

  • No skating on the lobby floor.

  • No food or drinks on the ice surface (water bottles only).

  • Spectators must remain in designated viewing areas and avoid blocking doorways or coach communication areas.

Equipment Guidelines

  • Sharpening Frequency:
Skates are typically sharpened every 20–30 hours of ice time or when edges feel dull.

  • Skate Care:

    • Use hard guards when walking off the ice

    • Remove guards after skating and dry blades with a soft cloth

    • Store skates in terry cloth soakers, not plastic guards

  • Clothing Expectations:

    • Warm, fitted layers (avoid loose clothing)

    • Mitts/gloves required for CanSkate

    • Hair tied back securely
